Birthmark Treatments FAQ in Broomall, PA

What is the difference between a mole and a birthmark?

Moles are growths on the skin that are usually brown or black; they may be located, alone or in groups, anywhere on the body. A birthmark is a colored mark that appears soon after a baby’s birth.

Can birthmarks be treated?

Most other vascular birthmarks can be treated. Port-wine stains and some hemangiomas can be disfiguring and upsetting for children. Small hemangiomas in less visible locations usually don’t need treatment, as most shrink back into themselves by the time a child is 10.

Is it OK to wax a birthmark?

While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that people avoid waxing skin with moles, varicose veins, or warts, there are plenty of other options such as tweezing, trimming, and snipping to try instead.

Are birthmarks genetic?

Some birthmarks are hereditary and run in families, but most aren’t. Very occasionally, some are caused by gene mutations. For example, some babies born with a type of birthmark called port-wine stains (because they look similar to a splash of wine) may have a rare condition called Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

Do birthmarks come from parents?

Hereditary – Some people have birthmarks due to their genes. For example, a child may have the same type of birthmark as a father, mother, grandparent, aunt, or uncle. In some cases, the birthmark appears in the exact same spot as the relative!

What happens if you cut off a birthmark?

Shaving or cutting your mole can disfigure your skin and leave a scar if done improperly. Removing a mole without sterile equipment in a nonsurgical condition may lead to infection. If your mole is cancerous, the cells can remain in the skin and spread.

Does olive oil get rid of birthmarks?

Containing moisturizing capabilities, if used on your skin, hair, or nail beds, it can make you feel revitalized. However, just because it’s moisturizing, it doesn’t mean that olive oil will be able to get rid of your birthmark.

What age do birthmarks appear?

They may not appear at birth, but often develop in the first 2 months. Strawberry hemangiomas are more common in premature babies and in girls. These birthmarks often grow in size for several months, and then gradually begin to fade. They may bleed or get infected in rare cases.

Do birthmarks come back after removal?

Keep in mind that laser treatments may not get rid of the birthmark entirely (though some birthmarks disappear completely after treatment). Plus, over time the birthmark may come back and need to be retreated.

Should you remove birthmarks?

Reasons for Birthmark Removal Most birthmarks do not pose serious health risks or require treatment. Many fade with time and only require observation. However, parents of infants and children with birthmarks can have great concern, especially when the birthmark is very large or in a visible location.

Can you shave birthmarks?

A shave excision treatment is used to permanently remove moles and birthmarks from the skin. Shave biopsies and punch biopsies are also used by dermatologists to evaluate skin lesions for skin cancer.

Which cream can I use to remove dark spots?

Blue Nectar Natural Vitamin C Face Cream. Glowpink Dark Spot Corrector Cream. Re’ Equil Skin Radiance Cream. Eeza Anti Blemish Face Cream. Dermafique Age Defying Nuit Regenerating Cream. DERMATOUCH Skin Radiance Cream. AURAVEDIC Dark Spot Removal Cream. Mamaearth Skin Correct Face Serum.

What are the different types of birthmarks?

Strawberry hemangioma. Medical name: Superficial infantile hemangioma. Deep hemangioma (he-man-gee-oh-ma) Medical name: Cavernous infantile hemangioma. Salmon patch. Medical name: Nevus simplex. Nevus sebaceous (knee-vus seh-bay-ceous)

Why do birthmarks suddenly appear?

Researchers are not sure why moles suddenly appear later in life. Most that do are benign and occur likely because of age, prescription drug use, sunburn or extensive sun exposure and genetic mutations. Any mole that appears and looks unordinary can be a cause for concern.
