Lice Specialists FAQ in Athens, AL

Do electric lice combs work?

Technically yes, a lice comb can be a complete lice treatment on its own, but it depends entirely on the person using it. If hair is treated with a good electric head lice comb and perfect precision, every louse and nit could be combed out and the lice effectively treated.

What soap kills lice?

If you’ve tried over the counter lice treatments recently and feel it’s not effective, try alternative methods: Apply mineral or olive oil to hair, leave on 30 minutes, wash out with Dawn dish soap. Apply white vinegar, leave on 30 minutes, rinse out.

What happens if lice gets left untreated?

Untreated head lice may degrade the scalp and affects it health and that of the hair. If the follicles become blocked, then hair loss may occur. It is hard to have well-conditioned hair if it is covered in head lice eggs, lice and bacteria.

What happens if lice doesn’t go away?

If a head lice treatment that you can buy without a prescription fails to work, the CDC recommends that you see a health care provider. Highly effective prescription treatments that you apply to the scalp are available.

Do you have to stay home if you have lice?

Students diagnosed with live head lice do not need to be sent home early from school; they can go home at the end of the day, be treated, and return to class after appropriate treatment has begun. Nits may persist after treatment, but successful treatment should kill crawling lice.

How do you permanently remove lice and eggs from hair?

Spinosad (Natroba). Spinosad is approved for adults and children age 6 months and older. It can be applied to dry hair and rinsed with warm water after 10 minutes. It kills lice and nits and usually doesn’t need repeated treatment.

Can lice survive the washing machine?

Either washing done with a water temperature of at least 50 degrees C or drying is necessary to kill head lice and nits.

Should I go to work if I have lice?

If you have live lice in your hair, then that’s easy to transmit to others. If you don’t and you just have the nits or the eggs, it’s okay to be around others. So it’s not going to pass on. You can go back to school, you can go back to work.

How long can lice stay dormant?

Off the host, adult head lice can live about two to four days at 74 degrees Fahrenheit (F) and one to two days at 86 degrees. Nits will remain alive off the host for up to 10 days; they will not hatch at or below room temperature (68 degrees F).

Do nits survive on bedding?

Lice and nits can live on pillows and sheets. Lice glue their eggs to the hair strands of their host. However, if a piece of hair with an egg falls out while the lice host is sleeping, an egg could end up on pillows or sheets.

How do you get rid of lice permanently?

Benzyl alcohol (Ulesfia). This lotion kills active lice, not eggs. Ivermectin (Sklice). This lotion kills most head lice, even just-hatched lice, with just one use. Malathion (Ovide). This very strong lotion paralyzes and kills lice and some lice eggs. Spinosad (Natroba).
